On 28 January 2017, the IQOE Science Committee approved the formation of the IQOE Working Group on Acoustic Measurement of Biodiversity on Coral Reefs. The group is co-chaired by Bishwajit Chakraborty (India) and Aran Mooney (USA). Other members of the group include Lucia di Iorio (France), Sophie Nedelec (UK), Marc Lammers (USA), David Lecchini (French Polynesia/France), Miles Parsons (Australia), Craig Radford (New Zealand), Jenni Stanley (USA), and Tzu-Hao Lin (China-Taipei). IQOE formed this working group to help bring together scientists from the global community with an interest in studying the acoustics of coral reef areas.

The Consortium for Ocean Leadership (COL) has funding from the Richard Lounsbery Foundation to advance U.S. multi-stakeholder collaboration on ocean sound data, research, and observation. As part of this effort, which will build U.S. engagement and leverage scientific resources and investment in support of the IQOE, COL will document the full landscape of U.S. ocean sound-related programs, task teams, and data sets; foster participation by academic scientists, federal agencies, and industry and conservation stakeholders; provide a forum for U.S. ocean sound‐related discussions and collaborations; and promote the need for a coordinated U.S. ocean sound science program aligned with the goals of IQOE and national priorities.

National Workshop on Passive Acoustic Sensors, Measurements and Calibration--This workshop was held at NIOT Chennai,  on October 14, 2016. Twenty-seven individuals participated in the meeting, including representatives from the Indian Navy, fisheries agency, National Institute of Oceanography-Goa and the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi. The workshop was opened with an inaugural presentation by Dr. S.C. Shenoi, Director, NIOT, followed by a talk on the importance of passive acoustics for monitoring underwater environments and the objectives of IQOE by Dr. Bishwajit Chakraborty, CSIR-NIO. Dr. G. Latha covered detailed technical aspects of passive acoustics and work carried at the NIOT over the past decade.  Dr. G. Ramdas spoke about underwater acoustic techniques, both including active and passive approaches. Ms. Malarkodi described the Acoustic Tank Facility and detailed the calibration work being carried out at the NIOT facility. There were lab visits and a panel discussions on passive monitoring and related technical issues by the participants.
